Ben Mynatt Sponsors "Splash Out Polio Swimathon"

CONCORD — The Rotary Club of Cabarrus County held their 5th annual Splash Out Polio Swimathon on Saturday as part of a global fundraising campaign to fight polio around the world. Rotary clubs from around the world hosted similar swimathons to raise money. Each dollar raised is matched by Bill and Melinda Gates, with the couple pledging to donate up to $35 million to the program. One dollar can buy five vaccines, officials said. The local swimathon was held at the West Cabarrus YMCA in Concord on Saturday. Organizers are still taking donations. Visit http://www.cabarrusrotary.org/events/rotary-global-swimarathon to donate to the program. Rotary clubs from around the world have been organizing the fundraiser since 1985, when Rotary International decided to focus its efforts on eradicating deadly polio. At the time there were about 400,000 cases per year in the world. Rotary International has donated $1.6 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. Thanks to Rotary's efforts and its partners, there were less than 100 cases in three countries in 2016. Source: Independent Tribune
